What is a Smart or Interval meter?

If you have a smart meter installed and you are located in NSW, Microgrid Power may be able to reconnect or disconnect your electricity supply remotely.  Smart meters also take meter reads every 5 minutes, which are supplied daily, without physically reading the meter.

Reconnecting your electricity remotely

When you call Microgrid Power, we need to ask you some questions to make sure it’s safe to reconnect the electricity to the property:
•    Do you know where the meter box or switchboard is?
•    Are there solar panels, or a battery or similar equipment installed at the property?
•    Has there been, or is there going to be any electrical work being done on the property before the reconnection of the electricity?
•    Is there any life support or medically required equipment at the property?
•    If there is life support or medically required equipment, do you know how to reconnect it once the electricity is back on?
•    Can you please confirm that there is no exposed wiring at the property?
•    Is the mains switch turned off and are all electrical appliances switched off at the wall?

If your reconnection is organised more than 48 hours in advance, Microgrid Power in the 48 hours prior to the connection date to confirm that the safety checks (above) are still in place.

If electrical work is planned or completed since the electricity was disconnected, you’ll need to provide a Certificate of Compliance – Electrical Work (CCEW) to Microgrid Power before reconnection. You should receive one from the electrician who did the work for you.

If a property has been disconnected for more than 6 months, Microgrid Power will require a ‘Remote Re-energisation Safety Statement’ to be provided.  This statement must be less than 5 days old and must be obtained from a licensed electrician.

Disconnecting your electricity remotely

If there is a smart meter at your property Microgrid Power can arrange to disconnect your electricity remotely for you.

When you call Microgrid Power will ask you some questions to make sure it’s safe to disconnect the electricity supply remotely:

  • Are there lifts or exit doors or gates that might be affected if we disconnect the electricity?

  • Are there any other dangers or hazards you are aware of, if we disconnect the electricity?

  • Is there any life support or medically required equipment located at the property?

  • Will any electrical work be done (started or finished) between now and the disconnection date?

To connect or disconnect your electricity please contact our customer support team on 1300 647 888 or support@microgridpower.com.au. We are available Monday to Friday, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (excluding public holidays).

Remote Reconnection if a Safety Inspection Certificate is required

If your property has been disconnected from the electricity supply for 6 months or more, Microgrid Power will be unable to arrange to reconnect and energise your property until a safety inspection has been completed.

If an electrical installation has been de-energised for 6 months or more, an electrical installation safety inspection is required by a qualified electrician to ensure, as far as practically possible, that the electrical installation is safe to re-energise.

You must arrange for this inspection at your own cost.

After the safety inspection has been conducted, an Electrical Installation Safety Inspection Certificate (remote re-energisation safety statement), must be completed by the electrician and provided to you. The certificate details the check and test to be completed.

Please note that the safety statement must be completed and signed by a registered electrician no more than 5 business days before the requested energisation date.

You must then send a scanned or electronically signed copy of the completed certificate to Microgrid Power at support@microgridpower.com.au.

This must be sent to Microgrid Power no later than 1 business day before your requested date of connection.

Under NSW safety regulations, Microgrid Power (and other retailers) cannot arrange for the re-energisation of the meter, without providing a copy of the completed safety certification certifying that it is safe to do so.

Quick Safety Inspection Checklist

  1. Arrange for an electrician to complete a safety inspection.

  2. Ensure that the inspection is no more than 5 business days before the connection date you nominated with Microgrid Power.

  3. Receive a signed safety inspection certificate from the electrician.

  4. Send the completed form to support@microgridpower.com.au no later than 1 business day before your connection date.

Remote Reconnection of your property if a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is required

If a property has had building or electrical work undertaken, Microgrid Power is unable to arrange to reconnect and energise your property until a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is completed.

Electricians must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017 and the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation 2018. A completed CCEW must be submitted within seven days of completing any safety and compliance test, on an electrical installation.

The electrician must provide a copy to both their NSW Fair Trading their customer and the distributor.

Under NSW safety regulations, Microgrid Power (and other retailers) cannot arrange for the re-energisation of the meter, without providing a copy of the completed CCEW.

Further information regarding NSW Electrical Inspection Requirements can be found here.

You must then send a scanned or electronic copy of the completed CCEW to Microgrid Power at support@microgridpower.com.au

This must be sent to Microgrid Power no later than 1 business day before your requested date of connection.

Quick Safety Inspection Checklist

  1. Arrange to get a copy of the CCEW from the electrician or person who requested the work.

  2. Send the completed form to support@microgridpower.com.au no later than 1 business day before your connection date.
